The GLG project brings together researchers from political science, law, economics, sociology, as well as professionals from international organizations, government departments, NGOs, unions, and the private sector.
Theme
“Labor standards in a global economy” is becoming a theme of increasing importance in the quest towards a fair globalization. While new global economic governance schemes is emerging, in particularly in the areas of trade, investment, competition, and intellectual property law, progress is much less evident with regards to social and labour governance mechanisms. There is an obvious gap between negotiation processes for trade-related issues and those for internationalizing, or globalizing, labour-related matters. A subject of intense debate, labour-related governance mechanisms have proliferated continuously since the 1990s. Many research projects and a body of scientific literature exist on the subject. However, given the complexity of the topic and the vast number viewpoints, it is easy to get lost.
Objectives
At present, new types of labour regulations are evolving and burgeoning. The GLG project aims to map the various trends in labour regulation and to understand how they shape, or could shape, a coherent system, capable of generating better working and living conditions for workers.
The goal of the project is thus to identify new mechanisms of labour governance in order to : 1) provide a mapping of initiatives related to labour governance, 2) promote a multi-sector dialogue on the evolution of global labour governance, and 3) contribute to research on the topic.
Research protocol and research activities
The research protocol is based on two key elements :
– It brings together researchers and representatives from the public and private sectors as well as from from civil society at conferences and roundtables on labour governance.
– Via the Internet, it brings together a number of participants through its virtual roundtable where, every month, a debate will be animated on a theme related to labour governance. (You are welcome to sign up !)
Data generated will be fed into the Directory of Global Labour Governance, the centrepiece of the project. The Directory will provide a mapping of what we call the “constellations of global labour governance”. This first step toward a better understanding of labour-related problems in the context of globalization will be useful in developing measures that can have a positive impact on labour conditions, wages, and workers’ rights. In constant evolution, the Directory will reflect the progress of the research team and incorporate ideas generated by the project activities.
